MTN Ghana Holds Stakeholders And Media Interactions
Scancom Limited, operators of MTN Ghana has organized a stakeholder and Media forum in the Central Region to enumerate on some of its exploits and the plans for the future.
Addressing the forum, Mrs Cynthia Lumor, the Corporate affairs Director of the company touched on some of the success stories of MTN over its 20 (10 years as MTN) years of operation.
On infrastructure, MTN currently boasts of over 2,600 2G sites, 1713 3G sites and 475 4G sites on-air across the country. On why MTN still operates 2G despite the progress made so far, she said most subscribers use phones that are only compatible with 2G. Plans are underway to build 345 new 2G network sites, 561 3G sites and 197 4G sites nationwide.
This monumental infrastructure drive has made sure MTN reach out to over 82% of the population and cover 47.5 geographical area in the country.
MTN has contributed immensely towards the growth of ICT in the country: voice calls, data, mobile banking entertainment, E learning among others.
One major success of the company has to do with the Mobile banking which started in 2009. According to Mr Lumor, there is currently over 8.5 million registered subscribers and over 5.5 active users of the MTN mobile money. To improve the services, modern security measures have been put in place to check and limit activities of fraudsters and to also minimize the level of vulnerability of subscribers. That aside, subscribers get to enjoy interest on their cash in wallet. MTN now has 16 partner banks with who they are running the services with.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, the MTN, through the MTN Foundation has over the past 9 years embarked on 142 major projects costing over GHC32.2 million. The MTN Heroes of Change continues to empower game changers in the Ghanaian communities to do more.
The exploits of the company have had immense impact on the economy of Ghana. The company has provided over 500,000 jobs in the country. In the 2016 fiscal year, MTN Ghana by way of tax and other statutory payments contributed GHS1.1 billion.
On what the future holds, Mrs Lumor said MTN has rolled out new innovations and interventions to consolidate their status as the best Telecommunication Network in the Country. To be able to operate the service sites properly without power interruption and to also reach out to areas where there are no electricity, the company in partnership with GIFEC have rolled out the ‘Rural Sites Solutions’ which will resort to the use of solar to power the service sites. In addition, MTN is investing over $143.7 million in areas such as: accelerated network roll out, increased network capacity, increase network redundancy in order to increase capacity, increase data throughput, improve network availability, improve network security and agility, and so on.
Stakeholders from partner banks, the Ghana Highway Authority, and the Media men from almost all the identifiable media outlets in the region were present. Also present were officials and workers from MTN.
