MTN INITIATES TO DRIVE MORE DIGITAL INNOVATIONS IN 2017

Ghana’s Market Leader in telecommunications Industry (MTN) Ghana has revealed that the company is putting in measures to introduce New Digital Services and maintain its state -of- the art network infrastructure to better serve their users.
According to the Corporate Service Executive for MTN Ghana, Mrs. Cynthia Lumour who announced this at a Media Stakeholders forum in Capecoast, MTN will build 561 new 3G sites to enhance rich digital services. Additionally, 197 new 4G sites will be added to replace existing 475 sites.
She continued that, plans are also underway to build 345 new 2G network sites in addition to the 2,600 2G sites already in existence. This is because most subscribers use phones that are only compatible with 2G.
Despite challenges like fibre cuts, battery theft, sim box fraud, cedi depreciation, high inflation, poor power supports Mrs. Lumour continued that the company recorded Gh2,773 million 2016 as compared to Gh2,315 million in 2015. The company’s strong revenue performance was supported by data, outgoing voice and digital Data revenue was up to 65.7 percent, contributing 42 percent to total revenue, driven by expansion of network coverage, increased availability of low - cost smartphones and LET network.
On taxes paid to the Ghana government, she said on every GHC1 spent by a customer, a total of 34.5% of it goes into the payment of taxes such as Valued Added Tax (VAT), National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), National Communications Authority (NCA) and others.
MTN Ghana paid a total of GHC1. 1 billion to the government and other regulatory agencies in 2016. The telecom firm paid GHC 51.8 million to NCA and GIFEC as dues and an additional GHC258 for the 4G LTE while GHC 85 million was incurred for SIIT.
She added that steps are being taken to block unregistered SIM CARD on the market which are mostly used to engage in illegal activities especially with mobile money transactions.
Central - western mobile money implementation boss Mr. Yeboah Essiama advised customers who give out their pins to merchants during mobile money transactions to desist from such acts.
He continued that modern security measures have been put in place to check and limit activities of fraudsters and to also minimize the level of vulnerability of subscribers.
There is currently over 8.5 million registered subscribers and over 5.5 active users of the MTN mobile money.
